課程概述

Infectious diseases of epidemic and pandemic potential require new and creativemeans for prevention and control. The current systems are not designed to rapidlyproduce a safe and effective vaccine to prevent and contain a pathogen currentlyunknown to cause human diseases (Disease X).
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the concepts of designing,developing, evaluating, and distributing a vaccine before and/or during a publichealth emergency such as a pandemic. Students will be divided into groups and assigned projects relevant to/between the lectures to complete a hypotheticalvaccine development, rollout, and monitoring plan.

課程目標
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Understand the role of vaccines in containing infectious diseases epidemics;
2. Describe the different types of vaccines and process of vaccine development/approval;
3. Be familiar with the challenges associated with vaccine development/approval and rollout during a public health emergency;
4. Appraise the tools used and systems in place to assess vaccines in clinical trials and postauthorization studies.
課程要求
Students are strongly recommended to complete one introductory course in epidemiology (or equivalent), or obtain consent of the instructor, before taking this course. Students should:
1. Read and review the reading materials before and after the lecture(s);
2. Attend lectures and participate in class discussions;
3. Collaborate as a group on project assignment and submit an essay.
